Principles
of Leader Forums
Leader Driven:
Effective learning forums are led by the leader of
the group involved. An external resource may be used to facilitate
the conversation and to conduct skills training, but the primary
responsibility for the sessions belongs to the group leader.
Custom Tailored:
Effective learning forums are not "off-the shelf" training
programs but custom designed combinations of models for thinking
and conversations about leadership, team dynamics, culture and
real work. Different groups in an organization might experience
common themes that ripple through an organization, but each group
might require a different design based on their current burning
issues or skill needs.
Participatory:
Members of the learning forum are actively involved. Learning
forums contain some presentation, but the primary tool for effectiveness
is dialogue.
Woven In vs.
Bolted On: Learning forums are an integration of people,
leadership and culture development with real work, not simply
short seminars that deal with abstract philosophy and academics.
Team Based:
Participants in effective learning forums share a common
mission or purpose, so that conversations center on shared issues.
A learning forum is a place to continuously improve team dynamics
and to assist team members have better discussion about the team
and their work. Members typically attend with their primary teams
although they could attend more than one session, based on responsibility.
